Aquatic Facility Personnel Training/Qualifications

Executive Director of Public Health (EDPH) Approved Aquatic Facility Training Programs

The Code of Practice requires that aquatic facility operators ensure that qualified personnel operate, manage and maintain these facilities. The primary aquatic facility responsibilities for which personnel require qualifications include: plant operation and maintenance, supervision and lifeguarding of patrons and emergency response including aquatic rescue and resuscitation.

Persons who obtain a qualification must do so from an approved training program, whereby an approved training program means approved by the EDPH (see Section 6.1 Interpretation of the Code).

An approved training programs/courses (Group 3 Aquatic Rescue an exception) requires the following:

  • Delivery through/via a registered training organisation;
  • Course content covers the relevant national unit of competencies prescribed by the Code, for the relevant qualification concerned;
  • Delivery and assessment by personnel holding a Certificate IV: Workplace Assessment and Training and/or with relevant industry expertise/experience/competence, and;
  • Registration with the Training Accreditation Council of WA.

Organisations/companies that would like to have training programs approved by EDPH should contact the Department of Health’s Applied Environmental Health Branch on 08 9388 4911 or 08 9388 4999, or email swimmingpools@health.wa.gov.au
