The Prevention and control program aims to reduce the incidence and impact of communicable diseases in WA.
Core functions
- Supporting the epidemiology and surveillance of infectious diseases program through development of policy related to prevention and management of notifiable diseases
- Developing information and education material for members of the public in relation to preventing the spread of disease
- Coordinating the implementation of the national immunisation schedule in WA provided through GPs, community health services -school based programs, and local government officers
- Conducting campaigns to promote public awareness and immunisation uptake to increase herd immunity
- Developing policy for health professionals in regards to prevention and containment of notifiable diseases
- Developing the West Australian Management Plan for Pandemic Influenza
- Coordinating the immunisation training and ongoing education for health care workers
- Consulting with health professionals and community representatives in the development of disease prevention initiatives
- Responding to new emerging diseases through implementing strategies aimed at increasing public and health care awareness; development of policy, and training programs to enable both health care workers and members of the public to take measures that protect them from disease.
