Needle and syringe program operation guidelines

The Poisons Act (1964) allows approved organisations to provide sterile injecting equipment to people who inject drugs.

Any organisation that operates a NSP must meet specific requirements as stated in the Poisons Amendment Regulations 1994 and be approved under the Act by the Chief Executive Officer. 

Organisations wishing to apply to operate an approved NSP are required to:

1. Nominate a Coordinator - Duties of the Coordinator of an NSP (PDF 182 KB)

2. Complete Form 14 - Poisons Act 1964 (PDF 200 KB)

3. Develop a program policy based on the Guidelines for the Establishment and Operation of a Needle and Syringe Program (PDF 229 KB) 

4. Send completed application form and program policy to:

        Department of Health
