Terminations of Pregnancy (Induced Abortions)

Any medical practitioner who performs a termination of pregnancy (induced abortion) must notify the Department of Health of the event within 14 days of the abortion being performed.

Relevant legislation

The statutory requirement to notify a termination of pregnancy (induced abortion) is specified in Sections 335 (5) (b) and (d) of the Health Act 1911 (Part XIII).

Responsibility for notification

The medical practitioner performing the abortion.

Who must be notified

Under the Health Act 1911, the Executive Director, Public Health must be notified.

How to notify

Notification must be made using the Notification by Medical Practitioner of Abortion form.
