The information resources below are intended to assist with the identification of public health factors in the early stages of an environmental assessment and other planning and policy development processes. The documents outline information required by the Department of Health, Local Government and other decision making authorities in order to assess whether a proposal will have positive or negative impacts on public health.

Screening tools

  This screening checklist is designed to help users decide whether Health Impact Assessment is required based on the characteristics of a proposal, project, program or plan that may have implications on the health and wellbeing of people.
  
• Determinants of health table (word 40KB)
  This table provides a two page list of health related determinants that should be considered in the early planning stages of a proposal.

Scoping tools

• Scoping checklist (word 40KB)
  This scoping checklist is designed to help identify the type of Health Impact Assessment required, who should be consulted and represented on a Steering Group, and the roles and responsibilities of Steering Group members.
  
• Scoping: Rapid Impact Assessment Tool (word 200KB)
  As part of the scoping process a Rapid Impact Assessment can be undertaken, which is usually a “desk top” exercises that assesses potential health impacts in light of information and evidence provided by a proponent, from local experiences and published literature. This method provides a minimum quantification of potential health impacts and assists with prioritising and making recommendations on the need for these health impacts to be appropriately addressed.
