Conventional Systems (Septic tank systems)

Without written permission from the local government, it is illegal to do the following:

• Dismantle a wastewater system;
• Remove a wastewater system wholly or in any part; or
• Alter or change the system’s mode of operation.

Aerobic Treatment Units

Maintenance work on an Aerobic Treatment Unit (ATU) can only be carried out by:

• Service persons authorised by the manufacturer of the ATU; or
• Service persons authorised by the Executive Director, Public Health on this list (PDF 71KB).

Emptying wastewater systems

Only local government approved persons are permitted to empty a wastewater system. Contact your local government Environmental Health Officer for further information.
