The Australian Government provides a
nationally coordinated approach to health disaster management through the Australian Health Protection Committee (AHPC).
The role of the AHPC is to provide advice to the Australian Health Ministers’ Advisory Council (AHMAC) on Australia’s preparedness for health emergencies, approaches to address any deficits, and to coordinate the national health response to significant incidents
In 2003, 2005 and 2008 the Australian Health Protection Committee (AHPC) conducted National Health Disaster Management Capability Audits to provide a national assessment of health assets that may be employed in a disaster.
The aim of each audit is to provide a clear picture of Australia’s health disaster response assets and to provide a functional assessment of the realistic emergency and hospital admitting capacity of the Australian public hospital system during a mass casualty incident.
The audit covers a broad number of topics and services, including:
- Public Health Response Capacity
- Pre-hospital response capacity
- Hospital Response capacity
- Critical Care
- Emergency Department
- Burns Management
- Spinal Management
- General medical and surgical beds and staffing levels
- Decontamination facilities
- Theatre
- Mortuary
- Aeromedical evacuation
- Equipment Stockpiles
- Pharmaceutical Stockpiles
- Human resources
