Health, like organisations of any kind, faces internal and external factors and influences that make it uncertain whether, when, and the extent to which they will achieve or exceed their objectives. The effect this uncertainty has on the organisation’s objectives is “risk”.
Within Western Australia, the emergency management arrangements detailed in the Emergency Management Act of 2005, describe State, district and local levels of planning and preparation, including the identification of risks and the development of resilience to those risks in all tiers of governance.
At a State level, the State Emergency Management Committee, supported by a number of sub committees, determines and directs the priority mitigation and resilience initiatives of the state. The Disaster Preparedness and Management Unit represents Health on these committees, subcommittees and working groups and contributes to the development and implementation of risk management policies and guidelines.
