Healthcare associated infections (HAI) are potentially preventable adverse events associated with hospitalisation. These infections can cause significant morbidity and mortality for the patient and have resource costs and potential legal implications for the hospital.
Healthcare associated infection (HAI) prevention has been identified as a priority initiative by the Department of Health WA with the formation of the Healthcare-associated Infection Council of Western Australia (HICWA) and the Healthcare Associated Infection Unit (HCAI) based at Communicable Disease Control Directorate.
