The Department of Health has expanded its warning to residents and travellers in the Pilbara and Gascoyne regions to take additional precautions to avoid mosquito bites.

The warning follows detection of the Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) virus in the Pilbara; and Kunjin virus in the Gascoyne regions of Western Australia. For the full story see:

With hot temperatures set to continue around the State over the next few days, the Department of Health is reminding people about the potential risk of amoebic meningitis.

Environmental Health Director Jim Dodds said amoebic meningitis was a rare but inevitably fatal disease that could only occur if water containing the amoebae went up the nose.

The Department of Health is advising people living or travelling through the Kimberley and Wheatbelt regions of WA to take care to avoid mosquito bites following detection of Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) and Kunjin (KUN) viruses for the first time in the 2011-2012 season.

The number of smokers in Western Australia continues to fall with a new report showing smokers made up 14.9 per cent of the population in 2010 compared to 21.8 per cent in 2002.

The results were published in the recently released Health and Wellbeing of Adults in Western Australia 2010, Overview and Trends report.

Following confirmation of encephalitis in a Carnarvon resident the Department of Health has reiterated its warning to people living and holidaying in northern and central WA to take extra care against mosquito bites. It has been determined that the encephalitis was caused by Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) virus or the closely-related Kunjin virus. In addition, several other possible cases of MVE infection are being investigated in Kimberley and Pilbara residents. For the full story, click on the link below.
